Empowering Future Innovators

The STEM Learning Center was founded by Bishop Osco E. Gardin Jr, Director of the New Covenant Community Development Center. As a pastor and community leader, Bishop Gardin has long recognized the critical importance of educating children, especially in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world. He believes that every child deserves the opportunity to explore, learn, and develop the skills that will prepare them for future success.
Working alongside him is Dion Byrum, a former NFL Football Player, educator, and current coach at Wingate University. Dion shares a deep passion for mentoring and teaching, bringing his experience in both academics and athletics to help guide students toward their full potential. Together, Bishop Gardin and Dion Byrum combine faith, education, and mentorship to create a space where children can thrive intellectually, creatively, and socially.

What We Do

At our STEM Learning Center, we focus on hands-on, interactive learning experiences that engage K–12 students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Through programs like 3D printing, drone soccer, virtual reality, coding, music production, and film editing, students develop problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills while having fun exploring technology and creativity.
Our programs are designed to build confidence, spark curiosity, and inspire a lifelong love of learning. Bishop Gardin’s dedication to youth education is also reflected in other initiatives, such as the TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program, which supports students in preparing for college and pursuing academic success. This STEM Learning Center provides a place where children can explore, experiment, and innovate in an environment that encourages growth and discovery.

Why STEM Education Matters

STEM education is more important now than ever. In today’s world, motivation for learning and engagement in education is declining, and many children are missing out on opportunities to develop critical skills that will shape their futures. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are the foundation for innovation, problem-solving, and understanding the world around us — skills that are essential not only in careers but in everyday life.
This initiative is designed to reignite curiosity and excitement in learning. By introducing children to STEM concepts in a hands-on, engaging, and fun environment, we aim to inspire a generation that loves learning, embraces creativity, and is equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. We believe that by fostering early engagement in STEM, students can gain the confidence and skills to succeed academically, socially, and professionally.
